Young people were committing violent acts in the streets in record numbers in 2004 and the Stop the Violence Coalition (STVC) was determined to put an end to it. Contributing to the problems of gang violence, retribution and drug dealing that went unchecked much of the time, the City of Buffalo had no homicide department. Back then, says Marc L. Fuller, STVC spokesman, “If you shot someone and could get away, you’d never get caught.”
The Stop the Violence Coalition, in conjunction with the Buffalo Urban League, helped to get the homicide department and the drug task force back in full working order. “But you can’t ‘arrest away’ the problem,” says Marc.
That’s why the STVC also works closely with gang members, arranging cease fires and truces. “We help them to see that they are not each other’s enemies. When we get them talking, they realize how much they have in common.”
