Hey, how are you? Do you work with the Buffalo organization PUSH? I just saw that they recently went to DC with the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative (from Youngstown, OH) to work on the Community Regeneration, Sustainability and Innovation Act of 2009 (HR 932). Are you familiar with this? I think it is cool if Buffalo and Youngstown collaborate - we have a lot similarities.

Thanks for the add...I read about your group when I was looking to move to Buffalo last year. I never found a teaching job there so I moved back to Youngstown, OH from NYC. YOUNGSTOWN=SMALLER BUFFALO in a lot of ways. Keep in touch - our Rustbelt communities have much in common.

What makes your initiative uniquely positioned to create change in your community? - Our program is uniquely positioned in the community because it is the Youth Prevention Services component of the “Stop The Violence Coalition” which has a significant impact in reducing violence here in the city of buffalo and creating substantial positive changes in the community. Our program is also unique because we are located in the community, are staff and mentors are from the community, we are known for our sincere and passionate nature in reaching out to the community and we have a track record for being able to change at risk youth from all backgrounds and ethnicity. Due to our various backgrounds as former gang members and life experiences from risky behavior/street lifestyle we can relate and understand what our youth are dealing with first-hand and our visibility has gained us the respect necessary to breakdown all barriers, as well as our faith in God.

We’re doing God’s work…”
Young people were committing violent acts in the streets in record numbers in 2004 and the Stop the Violence Coalition (STVC) was determined to put an end to it. Contributing to the problems of gang violence, retribution and drug dealing that went unchecked much of the time, the City of Buffalo had no homicide department. Back then, says Marc L. Fuller, STVC spokesman, “If you shot someone and could get away, you’d never get caught.”
The Stop the Violence Coalition, in conjunction with the Buffalo Urban League, helped to get the homicide department and the drug task force back in full working order. “But you can’t ‘arrest away’ the problem,” says Marc.
That’s why the STVC also works closely with gang members, arranging cease fires and truces. “We help them to see that they are not each other’s enemies. When we get them talking, they realize how much they have in common.”

“I don’t think we can even estimate how extensive the influence of the Stop the Violence Coalition is or how much good they do,” he says. “These are people who have the ability and the willingness to be intermediaries between the law and those who are on the streets in a way that the police can’t. They work tirelessly, days, nights, and weekends without ever being concerned about all the time they put in and without asking for any recompense. They are amazing people and I thank God for them every day.”
